Excellent reporting. This is absolutely how the republicans have run Texas for decades and I will never understand why people keep voting for it. Elon Musk didn’t move here because he likes the weather. Greg Abbott and the rest of the business daddy gop are selling us out every damn day so they can hang onto power.

This is horrible! This is scary! There will be more to come. This is how the rich get richer while the poor get poorer. Greed is the root to all even. Those leaders have sold their souls to the devil. The Oligarchs. We must ask our candidates how they will fix these mess. It’s so upsetting! 😢

Agree with you totally.

One reason Democratic candidates haven't come out stronger against the billionaire funded data centers/crypto mines is because of their endorsements from the electrical workers union (IBEW), even tho the jobs are temporary.

Oh, fuck. Really? I'm going to look into this.

That's my theory. IBEW is actively lobbying against any legislation banning data centers.

When Alcoa left Milam County, just east of Austin, the county commissioners there thought they could bring in bitcoin servers to bring back jobs. They use water and electricity, and the only jobs were temporary construction jobs. The company hires out security and when. Something goes wrong, experts come from larger cities to fix it.

What always amazes me is how little everyone seems to learn from it.

Medina down here in the hill country is looking to try and make a deal with Microsoft rather that fight. There used to be a man-made lake there. The droughts have been so bad that it hasn't existed for years. And I don't know how they think they will be able to fight a giant corporation when they don't follow through. Look at every oil and gas company or mining company.

Jesus. It's systematic.

Do I thank you for this horror story, Michelle? Yes-- it's imperative that Texans know that THIS is the BLUEPRINT!!! Shared on bsky.

My town of Hutto just stopped a data center from developing. The land was originally going to be for housing (and will continue to be so).
