Alito stayed the Texas map switch. Which means the map is back to 2025. But, briefs are due Monday by 5PM. It looks like the intent is to hear and decide before December 8. Talk about whirlwind!

I saw that as I was writing this and then pretended not to see it, because no one needs that confusion (especially me).

Yeah. I agree. This is so arcane, it’s better to wait until there’s more to report. Everyone knew it was going to Alito and that he would stay the maps.

Absolutely, that's why Briscoe Cain still filed for TX09 after the maps were tossed. I'm just going to go on what's on the Secretary of State's website, and where they land? We'll find out (hopefully) on Monday.

Bonkers couple of days for sure! I mean a stay of a preliminary injunction so that is Alito says “Stop District Court, You don’t get to tell Texas to stop using those maps”. The maps go into effect Dec 4. Filing deadline is Dec 8. We all have ptsd from gerrymandering right now. I have read all 160 pages of the opinion and 160 pages of the dissent. My poor lawyer brain hurts right now. After hearing me talking for it about an hour, my 12 year old niece said “Does Texas even have a government?” No, we don’t, thank you child of Portland who when I asked if ICE would arrest me, laughed and said oh are you going to go hang out with the naked dance team? Cause apparently now in Portland it is a national past time to do crazy things in front of ICE.

LOL about Texas not having a government. From the mouths of babes. She hit the nail on the head. Historically, Texas has either been completely ungoverned or very badly governed. If life ever calms down for you [BTW thank you for all you do], there are some good political insights and data into the political cultures of this country in the work of Colin Woodard. Unlike other parts of the country, Northern Mexico, including Texas, had no government for many generations. Woodard’s thesis is that these inherited political mindsets continue to work in our current politics.

Thank you for this analysis. We love to talk suppositions when we eat dinner and travel in the car. Today we had the privilege of meeting with some folks in the hinterlands (East Texas) who do not want to be forgotten in all of the notice being given in discussions or donations. Not that we can necessarily do anything about it but we talked about whether or not having primary opponents is a good thing.

I had this conversation with Kendall Scudder several months back. He convinced me. The more people we can get interested and excited in Democratic politics in Texas, the better.

We definitely need to start including our rural neighbors more. That has been my goal since being elected delegate in 2024. So all the state candidates are now making stops in Ellis County. They know if they don’t. I won’t stop talking about how Ellis was the only county to get bluer in 2024 until their ears hurt. We have a real opening now. Democrats need to show up in all 254 counties period.

Shit, I did miss that one. Sorry. I'll talk about these races again soon and make sure to cover that one intentionally.
