This is scary. This is the result of the decline in literacy rates. I recently read a well-reasoned and supported Substack article (probably won't be able to find it again) which took the precipitous drop in adult literacy in this country, meaning both reading and basic arithmetic skills and translated what that means in real practice. With the low level of literacy, people don't have the reasoning skills, the logic ladders or the imagination to understand their world.

Ms. Pena is a good example of what it was describing.

Yeah, I follow a lot of educators on TikTok who talk about it often.

They are probably paying her, some PAC or something. They have so much money. And this damn SCOTUS opinion just opened the floodgates of $ for them. It never stops.

This article makes me so sad because there are many many more Lauren B. Peña’s! It’s sad really. Yes, it’s because of the 30 years the GOP had had power in Texas public education.

I tell people these are going to be the people who work in nursing homes (and other places) taking care of us. We need to public education better now so that when they are taking care of me; the give me the correct dose of my medication. 🤦🏽‍♀️.

This is the perfect example of someone voting against their self interest. What is more worrisome is that her family and friends must think like her too. 😩

People cannot do fractions. Also they cannot transfer fractions to weight. If I say I need 3/4 of a pound I might get .34 or maybe .70 by adding 3 & 4 I guess or whatever.

They should have taken Home Economics classes. I love simple fractions.

I’m a retired Home Economics public school teachers.

I taught gallon man. Do they know how many oz = 1 lb?

Use money so people can see fractions. 3 quarters. .75

Use a pizza or a pie.

I teach my grand children now. ☺️

I do know the math scores improved this year while reading scores are flat so maybe there is some hope.

Thank you, Michelle! I found this piece hilarious!!! I've read the other comments & clearly I'm not seeing it like everyone else. (mind you, I've had a very stressful last few days) Just shared on bsky! With all the important ideas & strategies to contemplate, a young woman running for office as a bitmoji is funny as hell.

The great thing about America is that almost anyone can run for office...but that's the horrible thing too--almost any idiot can run for office.

And they do...

Once again - well said. Looking forward to a similar profile of the GOP candidate for my district - CD 21.

Please donate to the UMMBF, the United Mega Mayo Brain Fund, because a mind this stupid is a terrible thing to have.
