Lone Star Left Endorses Gina Ortiz Jones For San Antonio Mayor
Early voting has already started, so get to the polls!
Note: While there are only five days left in the Legislative session and plenty to talk about, early voting started yesterday, and the race for San Antonio mayor is one of the most critical elections in Texas right now. We’ll get back to the Lege tomorrow.
Early voting for the runoff election started yesterday. The last day of early voting is June 3, and election day is June 7. If you live in San Antonio, get your butt to the polls. If you have family or friends in San Antonio, call them up and tell them to get their butts to the polls. And if you live in another city where runoffs are happening, make sure to make your voice heard and vote.
Most people don’t realize just how much power a mayor has. In a city like San Antonio, the mayor helps set budget priorities, advocates for infrastructure, weighs in on housing and houselessness, and has the platform to fight for or against harmful state policies. Even with limited formal power, the mayor’s voice can shape how resources are distributed and who gets left behind. That’s why this race matters.
Who is Gina Ortiz Jones?
Gina Ortiz Jones is a first-generation American, Iraq War veteran, and former Under Secretary of the Air Force, the second-highest civilian overseeing both the Air Force and Space Force. The daughter of a single mother and public school teacher, she grew up in subsidized housing, attended John Jay High School, and earned a college degree on an Air Force ROTC scholarship.
Ortiz Jones led at the highest levels of national security, managing a $173 billion budget and fighting for reforms to support service members and their families. Now, she’s running for mayor to bring that same strategic, people-first leadership home to San Antonio, focusing on affordable housing, early childhood education, smart budgeting, and safer communities for all.
What will Gina Ortiz Jones do for San Antonio?
Gina Ortiz Jones brings urgency and a data-driven focus to the issues that matter most. Her priorities reflect the lived experience of working families because she’s been there herself. As mayor, she’ll be committed to:
Making housing affordable by streamlining approvals for 100% affordable projects, holding corporate landlords accountable, and helping frontline workers buy homes in the city they serve.
Expanding early childhood education and childcare, repurposing closed schools for Pre-K and affordable care centers, and ensuring every family can access quality programs.
Respecting taxpayers by demanding transparency in billion-dollar deals, revisiting NDA policies, and ensuring investments actually serve the public.
Fixing Ready to Work, focusing the program on real, high-demand jobs and requiring results, like 90% job placement within 90 days.
Connecting people to opportunity by closing the digital divide, expanding telehealth access, and protecting seniors from financial scams.
Improving public safety with more support for EMS, additional fire substations, and smarter investments in crime prevention, without over-policing.
Ortiz Jones understands that San Antonio can’t afford business as usual. She’s pushing for bold, community-centered solutions, not backroom deals. Her first 100 days are well-planned, her goals are measurable, and her leadership style is transparent, accountable, and decisive.
Because there’s no time to waste.
A clearer choice for San Antonio.
While Gina Ortiz Jones is calling for transparency, accountability, and measurable results, her opponent, Rolando Pablo, has shown a willingness to rubber-stamp billion-dollar public-private partnerships, such as Project MARBLE, without demanding complete data or public input. Where Ortiz Jones insists on protecting taxpayer dollars and delivering on promises, Pablo offers vague commitments and closed-door deals. The difference couldn’t be more evident, and the stakes couldn’t be higher.
