Texas Democrat Leads Charge to Impeach Trump. Five Others Betrayed the Moment.
Progressivism means accountability. These five Texas Democrats voted to bury it.
Yesterday, Texas Congressman Al Green (D-TX09) did what no one else in Congress has dared to do. He stood up and brought articles of impeachment against Donald Trump for unilaterally bombing Iran without Congressional approval, an act that could’ve easily sparked a global war.
It was a bold, principled move, grounded in the Constitution and decades of abuse under the War Powers Act. But instead of backing him, five Democrats from Texas joined Republicans to table the resolution and kill the effort.
Just yesterday, I wrote about the rising progressive populist movement in Texas, and almost immediately, I was challenged. “How can you say that,” someone asked, “when Texas Democrats just helped table Al Green’s impeachment resolution?”
It’s a fair question. And here’s the truth. Five Texas Democrats joined Republicans to bury that resolution. That’s five too many. But let’s keep it in perspective, they make up just 38% of the Texas Democratic Congressional Caucus. The majority of Texas Democrats didn’t take the coward’s route. Still, we don’t ignore the ones who did.
Being progressive doesn’t mean cheering every blue name on the ballot. It means holding our own accountable, especially the ones who should know better. If you’re not willing to stand up to Trump when he launches unauthorized strikes that could ignite World War III, then why are you in office?
Let me be crystal clear. If these Democrats won’t stand with the people, then the people need to find someone else who will.
That means primaries. That means challengers. That means no more blank checks for party-line voters who turn their backs on justice, peace, and constitutional authority.
And let’s talk facts. None of the five represent swing districts.
These are safe blue seats.
Which begs the question. Do Democratic voters in TX-7, TX-28, TX-32, TX-33, and TX-34 support giving Trump a free pass to bomb sovereign nations without Congressional oversight?
Because I doubt it.
But here are the five Texas Democrats who sided with Republicans to silence the only effort so far to hold Trump accountable:
Rep. Lizzie Fletcher (TX-7)
Rep. Henry Cuellar (TX-28)
Rep. Julie Johnson (TX-32)
Rep. Marc Veasey (TX-33)
Rep. Vicente Gonzalez (TX-34)
They didn’t just table impeachment. They tabled accountability. They tabled principle. They tabled the will of the people who elected them to defend democracy and prevent endless war.
Are any of these five names really surprising to anyone?
I have some steaming hot piles of accountability that I have yet to pile on Richard Raymond and Judith Zaffirini. Maybe after that, it’ll be time to talk about how our chosen Democratic representatives have been voting while in Congress.
Most of us already know that Cuellar, Fletcher, and Gonzalez are basically corporate shills for oil overlords and billionaire donors. Veasy flies more under the radar, but I became familiar with his voting record when Carlos Quintanilla was running against him last election.
Julie Johnson’s vote might surprise some, but truth be told, it’s how she voted in the Texas House, too. She’s always been a corporate liberal. I hoped she would do better in Congress. This vote is a disappointment.
If one of these five Democrats is your elected official, call them:
Rep. Lizzie Fletcher (202) 225‑2571
Rep. Henry Cuellar (202) 225‑1640
Rep. Julie Johnson (202) 225-2231
Rep. Marc Veasey (202) 225-9897
Rep. Vicente Gonzalez (202) 225-2531
Tell them, “I’m disappointed you voted to table the impeachment resolution against Trump’s bombing of Iran, because military action of that scope requires Congressional oversight. That was unacceptable.”
Make it personal, “You represent a safe blue district. Your constituents expect leadership, not acquiescence.”
Set expectations, “If you continue to side with Republicans over progressive values, I’ll support a primary challenger in 2026.”
You can also follow up in other ways, such as sending an email, contacting them on social media, or attending their next town hall.
Why it matters.
These seats aren’t on the edge. They’re deep blue. That means these members don’t get to hide behind “bipartisanship” or “electability.” They have the security and the responsibility to lead with courage.
So when they choose to play defense for Trump instead of defending the Constitution, that’s not a strategy. That’s betrayal.
And here’s the truth. If voters speak up, there’s real influence. These representatives don’t fear losing to Republicans. They only fear losing to us. And they should, because we’re done giving them a pass.
Accountability isn’t mean. It’s the bare minimum. Progressives don’t follow. We lead.
These calls aren’t symbolic. They’re a warning shot. They let every Texas Democrat in Congress know. If you vote like a Republican, you’ll get treated like one.
So let’s be loud. Let’s be clear. And let’s set the tone right now, before they get too comfortable thinking we weren’t paying attention.
Accountability matters.
So no, the progressive populist movement in Texas isn’t some fantasy. It’s growing. It’s watching. And it’s ready to fight, not just Republicans, but any Democrat who forgets they’re supposed to be working for the people.
Al Green reminded us what real leadership looks like. The rest? They reminded us why primaries exist.
This isn’t about petty drama. It’s about war powers. It’s about accountability. It’s about making damn sure no president, Trump or otherwise, can drag us into war without facing consequences.
And if our so-called allies in Congress won’t stand with us (the people), we’ll find new ones who will.
You’ve got until December. Choose your side wisely.

Al Green just reminded the entire country what backbone looks like—and five Texas Democrats reminded us why the word “Democrat” on a ballot means exactly nothing without accountability behind it. These weren’t swing-district survival votes. These were safe-seat betrayals. Voting to bury impeachment after an unauthorized act of war isn’t moderation—it’s complicity dressed up in donor-friendly lipstick.
Progressivism means principles, not passivity. We’re not asking them to be radicals—we’re asking them to remember they have a spine. And if they don’t? We’ll lend them a primary challenger who does.
Fletcher is a real disappointment. One of her major campaign organizers is an old friend of mine. Lisa has to be upset about this. Cuellar and Gonzalez are wastes of space ànd néed to be removed.
