This is not a radical idea. In the 1960's, California offered free tuition to in-state residents and Governor Ronald Reagan didn't throw a hissy-fit.

The "LGBTQ Studies" was only one of the dog whistles... the tell is the other one - "Nancy Pelosi-esque" ... these folks are relentless in their messaging. You've got to give them that.

I'd rather money go to tuition than some new multi-million dollar building (to benefit construction contractor friends) or some consulting study nobody needs. Professor salaries and student tuition first and foremost.

I personally attended UT through the Texas Tomorrow Fund, a TX program from the 90's(?). It allowed my parents to lock in tuition rates from the early 90's, pay into it, and then I attended in the late 2000's.

Same. In fact, I think college should be free. But Republicans definitely aren't ready for that conversation.

i was thinking about this...with the demise of Affirmative Action at UT doesnt' the tuition lock kinda red line minorities...

they can't go to UT academics wise, so they go to less than schools but pay more tuition.

and minority enrollment at UT has tanked.

The Permanent Fund makes the University of Texas system and Texas A&M University System the highest endowed public university systems in the US. Even including private universities, UT is number 2, right behind number 1, Harvard, and TAMU is number 8. The Permanent Fund is funded by oil revenues from production on state-owned land that is permanently allocated to fund the state university systems . As much as the legislature would like to raid and deplete the PF, its legal protections have proven to be ironclad. There is plenty of funding to help out middle class and working class families, and they know it.
