Umm where is expanding voting rights on this? We will never win again unless we fix this. We need to do this on statewide, to ensure that SCOTUS doesn’t take them away.
Schumer is an old school, inside baseball institutionalist who plays within the moderate establishment Democratic guidelines. He's trapped in an old paradigm of working with old-school moderate GOPers who simply don't exist anymore in the Senate. I very seriously doubt he has the vision and fire breathing guts to push a real left-wing populist agenda if he were elected Senate majority leader.
We may not have the majority in the Texas Senate, but no matter where things land, its a great way to put them on the record. Alot of thise races were close which will hopefully be a warning sign to the others.
I have a vestigal memory of progressive populism in Texas. Growing up in Hays County, I had a grounding in that mindset. I still find all these country-club Republicans up here weird. LOL
I have mentioned before that my grandfather was very active in local Democratic politics. What I hadn't put together until Clayton's tutorial is the Lampasas connection. My great-grandfather was active in Democratic politics in and around Lampasas, (Evant) which would have been around the same time as the populist movement there. It certainly fits what I know of their political leanings.
This is why I'm not AS surprised as some about Texas "turning" Blue. I knew it was always there and I knew it wasn't just Ann Richards all by herself either. Texas has a deep history with progressive populism. I guess you can say I was shocked by the magnitude of our win, but not surprised that it happened.
Thank you, Michelle! Just shared on bsky. This is all very useful to know, so we don't have to be so reactive and, thus, counterproductive. I agree that it has to be everything as you've said in other comments.
When the label damages the brand, change the label.
Goodness, I am a liberal but that label came to mean something else that I still don’t understand so I changed to progressive which feels like the liberal I used to call myself but isn’t, so I’ll embrace “economic populist.” My thoughts rest with the people like myself who work everyday to do their best to improves the lives of everyday Texans, not billionaires, but grandmas, grandpas, family, school kids, teachers, policemen, fireman and working people who pay for the system. May we have good jobs, affordable housing, excellent education, healthcare, and nice communities. Gina was right. We don’t just live here to serve billionaires. We serve the people of Texas.

I wrote about that the other day, and I agree. We need to walk and chew gum. It’s not one thing, or this and that, it’s everything.

I agree. I think too many in the Democratic base expect a new era, and Schumer can’t deliver it.
