Wow! Thanks for the report. I had no idea this even happened. Allison is Texas Republicans' worst nightmare. And, you are absolutely right. Abbott and O'Hare are telegraphing their weaknesses. And it feels so good that Allison and many others are capitalizing on their weakness. And, here's my report.
I just got through making the hike from NE Tarrant to whatever it is, SW Fort Worth to pick up signs and literature from the Tarrant County Democrats HQ. That place is hopping! Candidate signs and literature are moving fast. When ordinary people take it up on themselves to figure out how to find this not at all easy to find Democratic HQ office because they want yard signs, then you know something is up!
Even if we don't win (we will), Democrats fighting back is a beautiful thing. And it is confusing the hell out of Republicans, isn't it? They thought they could just throw out some middle school insults to define us and then just sit back and win.
For sure. After all this, I might nominate Allison the Queen of Texas politics. Someone was just asking me if the party was her full time job, and I was like, I don’t know, but she has a bunch of small kids, practices jujitsu, is a doctor/scientist, and I’m pretty sure she fights crime in the evenings. She’s amazing!
Alison is amazing. And a huge huge show out to the staff at TDP. It was those relationships that made sure that SOS alerted them. O’Hare claims he didn’t. Probably cause he was out golfing and not answer his phone. That is my bet.
Get ready Democrats. What I think he is doing is Jan 6. Making sure he has the folks to overturn our election. The Republicans hate Cook. They hate Schatzline. But Abbott, Paxton and Patrick are building their army to overturn the election. That is why we need everyone to help. Protect our voters!
Thanks for a great article. Just a couple of notes about your Richard Coke references. According to the January 15, 1874 Texas State Senate Journal (https://lrl.texas.gov/scanned/SenateJournals/14/01151874_3_6.pdf), the actual Davis/Coke vote was 65,549 for Coke and 42,083 for Davis. And while Richard Coke on January 19 threatened to go down and physically take the keys to the governor's office, it was his friend George Clark who persuaded him it was not appropriate for Coke to do so. So Mr. Clark accompanied the Senate's Sergeant-at-Arms Shropshire to the governor's office. In Mr. Clark's own words, "Together we went to the governor’s office, the doors of which were still locked and with a man there on guard. I asked him where the keys were, and he replied that he had them, and we [overpowered] him until he told us that he had them in his trouser pocket. I thrust my hand into his pocket and got them. We opened the door, and finding the middle door was locked, kicked it down. We then sent for Governor Coke to come and take possession.”
Thank you. Curious why the TSHA has it listed incorrectly. The axe story I’ve read more than once. I saw your bio. Totally trust your word on it. I know how these stories get retold and twisted over time. Thank you so much for the info, though I must admit I am a little disappointed.
Hi Michelle: The whole election fiasco has a lot of crazy stories surrounding it. Like Davis' supporters drilling rifle holes up through the floor of the legislature's meeting room and the kidnapping of the Mayor of Austin.
There very well may have been an axe involved in retaking the governor's office. George Clark's account says they broke the door down and, very likely, they used an ax to do it. And based on my research, I don't doubt that Richard Coke might have been the one with the axe, with subsequent accounts changed to protect his image. History is written by the winners.
It's a very moot point. Coke dominated the vote, the door was broken down, and the keys to the governor's office were obtained. The rest, as they say, is history.

The articles in the TSHA are written by various authors who use various references (which is why I went back to the legislative journals to be accurate). For example, this TSHA article has it correct https://www.tshaonline.org/handbook/entries/coke-richard.
