We in Dallas had in recent memory our first Convention countywide. It was a bit disconcerting compared to previous conventions. The sheer size and direction also was apparently intimidating to some. We did enjoy all of our speakers. As you say The Rev. Dr. Haynes was on fire, but then he always is! The mystery of why he went out of turn according to the original agenda is solved. He went to a second convention or maybe more!!! The fun part of Talerico 's ending is that my shirt said exactly the same words as his conclusion!

I saw Haynes in Tarrant. How has Dallas done it before? Split in congressional districts?

Veda's avatar

Basically it was supposed to be divided by SD first then CD but the Dallas portion. Ours on the other hand had people from other parts of the CD join us but the I believe they had to separate the State Delegates chosen.

I should have said SD by previous years I believe.

I love your resolutions!

I saw several of yours as well as those from our young dems in Tarrant and Ellis and submitted that to my co chair and our rules and resolutions reps. I didn’t have time to put them in the sponsor portal since I was the CD 6 caucus chair and on the convention planning committee, but I did my best. We passed everything on the consent agenda but our staunchest progressive was on the resolutions and young dem on rules, as well as I know one of our progressive Beltline Dems was on the rules committee for CD 24. I also know that my friend running for SDEC 5 who is a proud progressive, was on resolutions as well. I think everyone in Dallas did the best we could as the shit show of the election is still looming.

Thank you for your great work Michelle!

The way to bring the platform to the people of Texas is for the party to deliver the progressive energy and the need for change to the working and middle classes. Moderate democrats have lost the working class. For the democratic party to emerge like a phoenix from the ashes, we must reconnect with our historical base: the working class, the middle class will follow. Our tax dollars should not be used for the benefit of the billionaires and institutional investors who price us out of our own state. There is no reason that the billionaires club should own the support of working people, you know how they do this: through vitriolic culture war nonsense. Democrats have to reclaim the message and have to win the messaging. Democrats are smarter, we should be able to do this. Establishment democrats have a place, they have the ability to fund-raise big numbers, but they are lost using the moderate message. They appear antiquated and ineffective to the next generation of voters, and, honestly, we old fogies are more progressive than the establishment democrats ever recognized. Allow the progressives' energy to excite the electorate and allow the establishment democrats to raise the funds and we have a winning strategy.

Additionally, the platform should be delivered in terms of "freedom," individual liberty, and economic prosperity for it to connect with the working class. Democrats must make it clear that conservative corruption is destroying our state and our way of life. This is the way to connect to the working class voters, Gina Hinojosa and James Talarico are out there saying this but they need a louder bullhorn. The one thing the conservatives miss is that Americans and Texans do not want to be harassed and murdered by ICE, to be told which books to read, or to be lead by racist, unpatriotic christian nationalists. Religious freedom matters, freedom of speech matters, academic freedom distinguishes us from ideological ignorance and allows us to thrive, women's access to appropriate health care matters, good schools and not educational gimmicks matter. Access to health care and affordable housing matters, Affordable groceries matter. Affordable healthcare and prescription drugs matter. We have no excuse for losing on these issues.

100% and a lot of this stuff already is on the platform.

Gregory Pulte's avatar

Will it generate the necessary action?

Gregory Pulte's avatar

Democrats are known for snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.

I have faith in Gina Hinojosa and James Talarico that they will work tirelessly, voter by voter, to deliver.

Congratulations Michelle on your resolutions. I couldn't open my spreadsheet with all the proposed resolutions. Apparently, something someone at the state party did. So I couldn't review them prior to the convention. Oh well. I can't work spreadsheets anyway. However, as we went through the proposals in person on the screen, I now see that every resolution that I thought was smart, timely and well-written was yours.

I enjoyed the convention a lot. Freddie Haynes was on fire. I am hopeful about the coordinated campaign strategy they previewed for us. It sounded like the Taylor Rehmet race was Beta for this party strategy. Harris County sent 100 people up here to work on Taylor's campaign. If we can replicate this kind of coordinated strategy statewide, I think people outside Texas are going to be surprised at what we will achieve. I am so tired of seeing Republicans screw things up and hand us an opportunity upon which to capitalize and then we just let that opportunity slip away. I don't want to jinx it, but it just might be that Democrats are herding all the cats in the same direction for once.

I'll be in Corpus in June.

It was a pleasure to get to hear Freddie Haynes speak in person, I’m glad he’s going to get to be my congressperson.

Did I meet you yesterday?

Cynthia Phillips's avatar

Yes. You were trying to check in and I spoke to you briefly. Also, I was down in front with CD-24 when you stopped by to visit with someone in front of me. I have seen that young man around, but I can't quite place him.

Good to meet you in person!

Ban Corporate Ownership of Single-Family Homes. - I’m wondering if this passes if they will have to sell them all to families instead of rent. Would love them to have a set amount over what they paid to change for the houses. That would put many houses back on the market to deal with supply.

I still don’t understand the process. I only received 1 resolution and a request to vote against a LGBTQ resolution that was a negative one.

Then learned that there were so much more but I was going to have to read them while listening to speeches.

Then a group of people left (I don’t know how they were chosen to decide for our Convention as a whole).

After they worked on the resolutions.

Then there was 1 that was decided with the whole. It was an Israel and Iran resolution. It was explained to me that a yes was for Israel and a no was for Iran. WELL in this case “I’m for the Human Race” and I can’t decide between 2 countries that don’t do much for us but get us into trouble. If anything “I’m for America First.” Not in a MAGA way. But a way to keep us out of war unless they do harm to us. In my opinion Netanyahu already has. Iran has too. So I’m not for them. So I refrain from voting.

Lastly, although I enjoyed the convention, CD 35 was in the back of the event (Making us feel like step children 🤪) and it was hard to really hear what was happening. People around me were talking. Too.
