Thank you for not charging your readers. These days it's getting expensive to stay informed enough to vote intelligently. And thanks for the interesting story. Glad you found your calling!
I love history, especially Texas history. Good post. History is always necessary for a full understanding of current events. In a way, for me, it is helpful to remember that our history shows "same song, different verse".
You are right to suspect political violence at this time. I see that Franke was a German. The Germans in Texas were Abolitionist/Republicans and opposed to slavery. Confederate sympathizers murdered a lot of them. Texas was lawless in those years and Austin was particularly rough. I suspect his murder had something to do with that. If anyone wants to take a deeper look, here's a link:
If there isn't a better analogy for how things work in Texas... I appreciate and admire your work immensely! Words cannot express how important truth-telling is, whether people want the truth or not. It is needed. Know the truth and the truth will set you free ~John 8:32. Everything our collective leadership does is self-serving. Alternatively, we work to serve the good. Ours is God's work. It is the eternal struggle.
Everything our leaders do promotes the interests of billionaires at everyone else's expense. There are bright spots, leaders who speak the truth, leaders who work for us: Gina Hinojosa, James Talarico, Jasmine Crockett, Molly Ivins, Chris Moser, Angela Valenzuela, AOC, Bernie Sanders, Jim Hightower, Oscar Mauzy, there are many, but the altruism we see becomes overwhelmed by profiteering and exploitation. Too many of our people become victims when we lack the understanding of how our exploitation takes place.
Sadly, its a weak mind that assumes the position that these unscrupulous interests operate on our behalf when they oppress us, whether that be through the imposition of belief systems, our schools' curriculum, school funding, the books we can or cannot read, how they spend our money, IF we can have healthcare, how we treat others, and even who can pee where. Texas was once a better place. I believe Texans are inherently good and decent people, but you wouldn't know this based on social media hatefulness or the way so many of our elected leaders betray us. They give us enemies and a reason to hate those enemies, in exchange for accepting our oppression.
Growing up I was not a fan of history. I’m not sure why. However; today I do like it now. Thanks for this History lesson
I think politics has made me want to learn more. Maybe, it’s because I have appreciation that my life was transformed by great Democratic Party leadership.
I was part of the first class of Head Start. My older sister; got lots of Pell Grant money (in the 70s) and became a public school elementary teacher. My Dad was part of WWII, the end of it, he taught us to love this Country. He made me patriotic. I was 8 when he past and I received his Social Security and VA money to become a public High School Teacher, too. So when I look at my family’s History then I get a better sense of History. I try to appreciate the good that politicians have done for US.
I fight so that the people today that have the life I had as a child (which was poor but I don’t remember being hungry) and to succeed to become productive citizens in society, like I did. Wealth has never been important to me. All I need is a few clothes to wear and food to eat. My sons don’t get it but I live to fight for, that if there is an poor child out there; they too may take advantage of the opportunities that are offered today so that too become productive citizens in society. I feel that right now; our State isn’t doing that. 😢
I agree; they didn’t even tell me who the Latino’s were. I later found out that Juan Seguin was Latino 😢
So as a Mother of 3 boys (and me being a teacher) noticing the lack of information of Latino Leaders (living in a majority white neighborhood and Republican), I figured, I better learn so I can teach my boys. ☺️

They only told us the boring history growing up. 😉
